We gave this to our four-year-old for his birthday because he was green with envy over his five-year-old brother's Paper Jamz guitar. These things are so great! For both boys, I didn't even listen to the pre-loaded songs. I waited until they were asleep at night and carefully unpacked the box to hook the guitar up to the computer and change the songs on it.

The user interface for the Paper Jams program is easy-peasy. Wading through their list of working songs on their website, not so much. Here's what I did: I went on the website and scrolled through the list of songs that were optimized for this guitar.

We are country music fans here, and although there aren't as many country songs as pop songs, there's still a great list from which to choose. As I scrolled through, I wrote down any songs I thought would be good. I made sure I had at least a dozen. (Make sure to note the play time, too. This is vital later!) Next, I created a desktop folder called Paper Jamz Songs to drop any mp3's into that will work on the guitar. I went through the list I'd written and checked our thousands of music titles.

(I was actually kind of surprised that I didn't have some I thought I already had! What self-respecting country music fan doesn't have at least one copy of 'Ring of Fire'?!) When I found one that was on the list, I dropped it into the folder. Then I went on Amazon and downloaded a few of the other songs I didn't already have and placed copies in that folder. (At around $1 a pop, c'mon - don't be cheap!) When you open the Paper Jamz app, it will give you the option to drag and drop songs into the library (to add to the titles they already have on there - not many of which I knew). It's as easy as that! If you made sure the run-time of the song matched that which you noted in your song list, it's probably the right version and a green arrow will pop up on the left of the song in the library. Last, drag and drop up to three different songs into the play list on the right of the app.

Give it a minute to configure the guitar. Unplug it, put it back in the box, wrap it in balloon wrapping paper and hand it to your child on his/her birthday. NOTE: Do NOT NOT NOT put songs on the guitar that are not programmed. I thought I could handle it if the song was one of my favorites to listen to, but listening to your kid play chord after discordant chord over your favorite song is about the most annoying thing EVER.

ALSO NOTE: Some of the best songs are too long for just one spot on the guitar and end up spilling into two or even three slots (yes, I tried putting Freebird on my 4-yr-old's toy). It's up to you if you want to do that or not. I haven't tried it yet, as I opted to go with more choice for him. I'd rather listen to three different songs over and over and over and over than one really long one. My sons (barely 4 and 5) had no problem learning how to make the guitars play songs, and it is cool that no matter how out of rhythm they play, the chords they stroke match the music. Neither of them gets how to do anything fancier, like trying 'real' chords or bending sounds or what-have-you, but they play these all the time anyway and are convinced that they are gifted musicians.:).

This guitar is unique. There are no strings to tighten or break.

It is a flat board with many playing options. After reviewing many guitars for my granddaughter (a younger child), I found that the major complaints were breaking of strings & quality of sound. This guitar has all that covered. Although it may not look like a conventional guitar (flat, not 3 dimensional), its sound beats any product I have considered purchasing. It truly sounds like a real guitar. The price was great. Both my grandkids are using this item & enjoying it.

At this price, I can afford to buy another to avoid the problem of shared time. Even my husband & grown daughter pick it up & play it.

If you do not see your instrument, it is possible you have not yet connected it to your computer via the USB cable provided. Unplug/re-plug the USB cable into your instrument’s USB port and unplug/re-plug the other end of the USB cable into your computer’s USB port. Make sure both ends of the USB cable (the end connected to the instrument and the end connected to your computer) are pushed all the way into each USB port. If this does not solve your problem, please contact customer service for more help.
